We must be able to rightly discern what we are hearing. From a Biblical stand point… not from what we think God should be like. If you truly want to know God you must take Him at His Word. Now to make things a little easier you can use the table of content below. But I do recommend going through all the parts of this post if you want to learn the different ways God speaks in the bible. And the Bible is beautifully clear on the ways God speaks.
And just to make a special note…there is no real reason to the order of these. They are random. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning. The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. The Lord speaks through His Word. This can be a verse, or He speaks to us in our daily reading or He reveals truth through a study.
And there are many times He will highlight a verse or portion of scripture and then confirm it. You will find yourself running into that same verse somewhere else, or someone else saying it. Always we must look at the Word of God as a whole. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
There are times when the Lord will speak to us in a still small voice. This can be very contrary to what we think God should talk like. We expect the powerful wind, a big shaking like an earthquake, or a roaring fire…but nope! Theses whispers can look like a passing thought, an impression, a strong sense of knowing. These things can be very real and powerful ways God speaks. I will go more into impressions and sensing in the next part. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
And after the fire came a gentle whisper. Impression or sensing something can be God telling us something. This is not to be confused with suspicion. It can be a deep knowing. She had such a strong sense that it would be a bad idea. But I begged my mom to let me go. So, she reluctantly shrugged off the feeling and thought perhaps she was being overly protective.
Long story short, I did go to the birthday party. I ended up in the hospital though. A rattle snake bit me when I was in yard playing with the other kids. You can read the verses below. According to the Strong Concordance it is first meaning discern.
Interesting enough they use the intensively. Compare G If paul had a vision they would have used a different greek word. What he perceived was an impression he saw spiritually or a deep intense knowing that the ship was going down. God will sometimes send an angel to speak to us. We see countless stories in the Old and New Testament. The very word angel means messenger. If you have been on my blog you will have seen my posts on angels.
God speaks to His people every time we read the Word, hear it read, or preached 1 Thessalonians Today, if you want to hear God audibly speak, open the Word and read it out loud, for it contains the promises of the God that find their apex and completion in Christ alone.
Does God still speak to us today? Perhaps they wish God would simply write a message in the sky or whisper in their ears. What does the Bible have to say?
In the Old Testament, God spoke to people through prophets in various ways Heb It is common for people to think of a prophet as someone who foretells a future event. When Moses spoke to the Israelites of the Law he received from the Lord Exodus , he was just as much a prophet as Isaiah when he foretold the suffering of Christ Isaiah The Lord gave His word to the prophets in various ways, including direct speech, dreams, and visions. Direct speech is when the chosen prophet audibly hears God speak to them.
Such incidents happened with Moses when God spoke from the burning bush Exodus 3 , and Samuel in the temple 1 Samuel An interesting thing about these dreams is many required an interpreter.
A vision is an ecstatic experience a person receives while they are awake. In visions, the person can interact and ask questions as it happens Ezekiel ; Zechariah The Bible is the primary way God speaks to us, and Jesus gives a fervent warning to be on guard against false prophets Matthew Christians must have discernment.
Intentional or not, some pastors and Sunday school teachers are false prophets because they deviate from the teachings of Scripture. Therefore, an immature believer should never make the mistake of dependence on a teacher as their sole means of knowledge about God. But does God still speak to us today? If so, how? Often when people ask this question, they are talking about an audible voice. And God can do that. He can do anything He wants. And the way God works is one of those questions.
God treats each of us as unique children. None of us are cookie-cutter Christians. However, here are eight ways God often uses to communicate with us. Let's take a look at eight specific ways God speaks to us today. That means God is whispering, and sometimes shouting, all through His Word, giving us instructions and principles for life.
As we interpret Scripture by other Scripture, we avoid the false logic and misinterpretations that sneak into our world. Of course not! God never violates His own Word or principles. I needed help for raising my children. Marriage difficulties? God spoke about that as well. Times when I was afraid? Because the sheep know who He is. They belong to Him, and they recognize Him by the sound of His voice. God designed—and spoke them all into existence. God may use a friend, a teacher, a parent, or a preacher to convey His message of truth to us.
Their words may come as a warning, a blessing, or as a prophetic truth about our lives. Whether we choose to hear it or ignore it, depends on us. Do their words line up with Scripture? Will God confirm or affirm that truth in us? A good friend once cautioned me about flirting with danger.
