How fast can a jellyfish kill you

Their eyes are grouped in six lots of four eyes. Jellyfish sleep at night. Scientists have only recently learned that jellyfish settle on the bottom of the ocean floor at night to sleep and then feed during the day.

Jellyfish usually eat two to three times a day. Small jellyfish eat prawns and big box jellyfish eat fish. Consequently the best way to tell the age of a jellyfish is by measuring their eyes and not by the size of their body. In the open ocean, jellyfish only live for a period of about three months but they can sometimes live for up to seven to eight months in a science lab tank. Our biggest lesson from talking to Jamie?

Always wear a stinger suit during stinger season even if they do make you look silly! In the event of a box jellyfish sting, clear airways and check breathing and circulation. While the Australian Resuscitation Council recommends applying vinegar to jellyfish stings, some researchers disagree. Jamie says that his research shows that applying vinegar is a double-edged sword.

If you get a big box jellyfish sting the pain is immediate and there is no pain relief. The most important things is to keep the heart pumping. It is the biggest and arguably deadliest. Unlike other jellyfish, box jellyfish actively swim and hunt for their prey! In addition, they have eyes. They can see dark objects better than light objects and will actively avoid them in the water.

This is one reason dark clothing is better than light when in box jellyfish waters. A box jelly has clusters of 15 tentacles that attach at the four corners of the box-like medusa — that makes a total of 60 tentacles. That means a box jellyfish has enough venom to kill nearly 60 humans.

Venom is injected in the same way it is with other cnidarians, such as the Portuguese man-o-war that we discussed in the previous chapter. Small cells with nematocysts will fire upon touch or chemical stimulation. In this case, there are hundreds of thousands of nematocysts that fire per sting. These hooked, dart-like syringes dispense the venom into their prey — or our skin. A box jelly is estimated to have about 5 billion nematocysts!

The venom of a box jellyfish is different from other stingers. We know it contains a multitude of compounds that, when injected together, work very effectively to immobilize and kill their victims.
